Prairie Star Press, August 2010

FROM THE PRESIDENT

UFO”S, not anymore. Sometimes I hesitated to take a class due to the heavy guilt of coming home and not finishing a quilt from the class.

I would prepare, I assemble all the needed fabrics, I cut, I take the class and make a sample, I place it along with the pattern, neatly in a project bag, I go home and there it sits while I work on the quilts I have already started.

My focus and attitude have changed----------I now place this project bag in my RPK bin. Rather my Retreat Preparation Kit bin. It’s perfect; everything is ready and waiting to take on retreat. No last minute scramble to decide what to bring. I have two or three or more projects ready to go. It is a win/win situation.

Good class, retreat ready projects, no guilt. I love it. Luckily, retreat is not till the beginning of next year so, there is plenty of time to take some classes to start you own bins. I think some of you may have your own bins started but didn’t know what to title them. Take another look at your projects, if there is truly something you would never finish, our UFO girls would be happy to raffle them off.

School will be starting soon, then our Quilt Show . Hope everyone is looking forward to seeing all the wonderful work our guild has done these past two years. Sign up to help out so you will be sure to be there.

SPRING CLEANING?

Out with the old, make room for the new. We are still collecting scrap fabric for the quilt show. And for you knitters, we will also collect any scrap yarn you might have. We are happy to get it off your hands, and your conscience. If you will never use it, wondering why you ever bought it, asking yourself if you will ever use it, here is a guilt free way to pass it on. If you have too much to carry to a meeting, give us a call, we will be right over.

BUZZ FROM THE BEEHIVE!

Hello to all the wonderful Bees and Wanna-Bees!!! I hope you're having a lovely summer and taking some special time to slow down and do some handwork...hand-quilting, cross stitch, applique or how about knitting!!! I'm learning how to knit socks this summer for the chilly days ahead and it's been a terrific experience...socks don't look too bad either! Did you try something new this summer? It's not too late and you'll feel so pleased that you did. How about doing something special with your Bee!

Maybe a road trip to a lovely quilting destination or a picnic where a handwork project is the dessert or perhaps visit the Chicago Art Institute for some inspiring color and quilt ideas (imagine a quilt based on the colors of a Monet or Van Gogh painting!)! In other words, shake up your quilt world a bit and renew your friendships and your projects! The Beehive would love to know what you did on your summer vacation...so drop me an email, tell me your story and we'll share with the Guild next month when our thoughts turn to Autumn and the PSQG Quilt Show. Come visit the Beehive at your Chapter meeting, you'll find me behind the Bee Skep and let's plan something wonderful for you and your Bee!

Until next time, may the joy of needlework be yours,

Teresa Kasch, Beekeeper

Show and Tell

Just a reminder to limit your "Show and Tell" to three items. We want to allow plenty of time for our wonderful speakers at each guild meeting.

The PSQG Board

Thanks . . . and please

Thanks to everyone for making the picnic a fun (and very tasty) event. It was great to see the products from our young quilters. But . . . with all of the activity, we forgot to ask members to sign up to bring treats to the August guild meetings. So . . . if you have some yummy item hanging around your kitchen, please bring it to the PSQG meeting at the end of the month. Let's fill the treat table! Thanks! to pay your dues by September 1st to be included in the Guild’s Directory for 2010-2011.

Many Starts – Mini Finishes

There once was a quilter named Min.

Whatever she'd see, she'd begin.

A large quilt, a small quilt,

a doll quilt, a wall quilt.

“I'll finished these later,” said Min.

Now what shall I start on today?

I guess it will be applique.

Some birds in a group

I'll frame with a hoop.

Today, though, I'll put them away.

“I think I will make a new vest,

in silk, or would cotton be best?

Trapunto I'll do,

then Sunbonnet Sue:

But now I will give them a rest.

“A tote bag I've wanted to sew,

and then I'll try quilt-as-you-go.

A Radiant Star

for next year's bazaar.

Just when they'll be done, I don't know.

“For Christmas I've projects galore.

A tree skirt, a wreath for the door.

I'll make a soft box

and red quilted socks,

and what's not completed, I'll store.”

“Is anything finished?” asked Son.

Her answer could only be “None.”

so Min made a vow:

She would not allow more new projects—well, maybe just one.
